Biography
Sonia Ziccardi was born in Genzano di Roma (Rome) in 1993.
She began her musical path at the age of 14, initially studying modern singing at a local music school. She later pursued complementary studies in music theory and solfeggio, obtaining the license from the “A. Casella” Conservatory in L’Aquila, under the guidance of Maestro Franco Canfora, with an overall rating of 8/10.
In July 2013, she was admitted to the Bachelor’s program in Jazz Singing at the “O. Respighi” Conservatory in Latina, where she studied with Maestro Susanna Stivali and later with Maestro Francesca Sortino, graduating in 2016 with full marks (110/110).
In October 2018, she completed a Master’s degree in Musical Disciplines with a focus on Jazz Interpretation and Composition at the same conservatory, under the mentorship of Maestro Mauro Zazzarini, graduating with honours (110/110 cum laude).
In July 2019, she obtained a First-Level Master’s degree in Cantiere Infinito, focusing on choreo-musical improvisation techniques. This program was promoted by the MAXXI Foundation, the National Dance Academy, the Santa Cecilia Conservatory and the MACRO Museum in Rome. She graduated with honours (110/110 cum laude).
In July 2022, she participated in the Siena Jazz summer workshops, studying vocal technique with Michael Mayo, Jo Lawry, Theo Bleckmann, Sara Serpa and ensemble music with Gerald Clayton, Nir Felder, Maurizio Giammarco and Achille Succi.
Over the years, she has attended several masterclasses with renowned artists such as Bob Stoloff, Vito Caporale, Daphne Nisi, Eleonora Tosto, Daniele Roccato, Diana Torto, Rita Marcotulli, Michele Rabbia and Maria Pia De Vito.
Professional Experiences
2024
- In april, she performed at the Taste of Jazz festival of Novara Jazz and at the historic venue Capolinea 8 in Turin with the project Blossom Dearie – The Baby Voice.
- She also performed at Whelan’s in Dublin with a tribute to Anita O’Day, in a duo with pianist Vittorio Solimene.
- In december, she returned to the Taste of Jazz festival at Novara Jazz with the project Nat King Cole in L-O-V-E, performing at the Jazz Club di Torino and Cascina Nascosta in Milan with the project Blossom Dearie – The Baby Voice.
2023
- Finalist at the Roma Jazz Contest 2023.
- In july, she performed at the Ardea Jazz Festival with the project A Jazz Walk.
- In august, she took part in the Piano piano per Sulmona festival as part of MuntagninJazz with her own project Nude.
- She curated the jazz series Magna Charta in Jazz in a bookshop in the province of Rome, paying tribute to jazz legends alongside talented Italian musicians.
2022
- She collaborated with dancer Erica Bravini on the improvised music project Onomatopea, participating in the festivals Danza Battente, MarteLive and Dominio Pubblico.
- In december, she joined the international project Songs of Protest, created by Iranian musician Payman Abdali, as a singer and songwriter.
2021
- She participated in the Festa per la Cultura during the Estate Romana event with the project Go Wait Dot by dancer and performer Mara Capirci.
- She performed at the Cori Jazz Festival with the jazz project Ziccardi/Solimene Duo and opened the concert for the Francesco Bruno Quartet at the Nettuno Jazz Festival.
- She collaborated with guitarist and composer Sami Nanni on the artistic project Sottoesposizione, writing and performing the lyrics for the compositions.
2020
- She was a guest on Gabriele Brocani's program Note di Sport on Rai Radio 1 Sport, presenting the project Nude – Spoglia. She made her debut as a singer, pianist and composer at the Tor Bella Monaca theatre in Rome.
- She participated in a musical reading as part of the Coex: Festival delle Arti Visive.
2019
- She created a choreo-musical performance titled Abbracciami for the sculpture exhibition of artist Patrizia Trevisi, alongside Mariasole De Pascali (flutes), Mara Capirci and Mariagiovanna Esposito (dance).
- She participated in the Pre-festival In/Su/La of contemporary art with the project Swarm by Elena Paparusso and Mariagiovanna Esposito, involving four voices and four dancers.
2018
- Finalist at the Paolo Randazzo Music Award in the Jazz Voices category, winning the second overall prize, awarded by a jury chaired by internationally renowned trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso.
2017
- She performed at the Ardea Jazz Festival with the Sonia Ziccardi Quartet and at the Piano piano per Sulmona festival.
- She won the Ovidio Prize in Sulmona, securing first place in the Jazz Love Song category with the original piece The Shining Light, during the show Tale e quale a… Ovidio by Gabriele Cirilli.
Literary Experiences
In march 2021 she published her first poetry collection, Spoglia, with Edizioni Progetto Cultura, overseen by Marco Limiti. The work received critical acclaim, earning her first prize in the poetry category for the Incontri Call, part of the VitaminaG 'Fame di libri, Sete di arte' project, under the GenerAzioniGiovani.it program.
In august 2022, she contributed to the volume Pier Paolo Pasolini: 6 Questions for Young Poets, edited by Angelo Fàvaro and published by Eleonora Rimolo's Delta3 Edizioni. The collection features a preface by Giulio Ferroni, president of the Pasolini100 National Committee.
In february 2023, her work appeared in the collective poem Hamlet’s Ship, focusing on the theme of silence, published by Edizioni Progetto Cultura and curated by poets Luciana Raggi, Fabio Sebastiani and Maurizio Mazzurco. For this anthology, she composed two poems inspired by Leopardian song.
